“Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.” - Helen Keller Optimistic October has been a month of hopes and new achievements. With the arrival of this month, we have been able to commence the classes on a hybrid model. The exciting stepping in of our zealous students on campus witnessed them beaming with excitement and happiness. The core value of the month ‘I Am Peace’ was discussed well during the QCT lessons in which students could understand the concept and its importance by watching videos on the theme. The students shared their views about peace within and everywhere. The festive season of Dussehra and Diwali has been enjoyed in the special assemblies and several cultural performances by our talented Suncitizens. The significance of the festivals was conveyed well. The students commenced their morning assemblies every day with beautiful thoughts and enriching words. They enjoyed reading the NIE and sharing numerous facts and regular updates about vaccination. As integration part of the school pedagogy, the zealous learners participated well in the Maths- Science and ICT Integration Week and were exposed to various new digital tools.
MATHEMATICS QUADRILATERALS: A prior knowledge of Types of Quadrilaterals, Pair of Angles, Adjacent Angles and Vertically Opposite Angles was done with the help of Geogebra Software. With practice, students understood the concept of properties of Types of Quadrilaterals and where to apply this. Students also practiced the following concepts: Types of Quadrilaterals Properties of a Parallelogram Another Condition for a Quadrilateral to be a Parallelogram The Mid-Point Theorem INTEGRATION WITH ICT – Students used Geogebra Software to prove the Properties of Parallelograms. Students enjoyed working on this software and created their own shapes to find unknown angles. INVESTIGATION: Students also investigated the sum of all angles of a Quadrilateral using Geogebra / GSP software. The Practice exercises from the textbook and Case Study Questions worksheets were done which strengthened their conceptual knowledge. STATISTICS: The mathematics session began by checking the previous knowledge of Meaning of Data, Organizing of Data and Representation of Data. Students gave various examples where they use Data like – comparing scores, weather change, marks obtained etc. Students also enjoyed understanding the following concepts: Collection of Data Presentation of Data Graphical Representation of Data – Bar Graph and Histogram Mean, Median and Mode of Grouped Data INTEGRATION WITH ICT – Students used Excel software to show Bar Graph and Histogram. They enjoyed working on this software and created their own Bar Graphs and Histograms with examples. The practice exercises from the textbook were done which strengthened their conceptual knowledge. SDG 3: Health and Well-Being Students recorded the total numbers of people who got vaccinated in various countries and represented the top 5 countries in form of a Bar Graph. IT During the process of learning about Digital Documentation, the students explored different features of Word, how to create and enter data into a table, editing, formatting and mail merge. Keeping this in mind, an imbalance in the distribution of wealth, the students designed an awareness poster on Reduced Inequalities by using shapes, graphics, added texts, page border and page colours using Writer. All the posters are added to Wakelet. Wakelet Link: https://wakelet.com/i/invite?code=5pzxxhse Using the tool CANVA, they made a powerful Infographic of amazing facts about Typing and facts from The Guinness Book of World Records. Students were explained the touch-typing method which was followed by the typing practice in Rapid Typing software. PHYSICS “If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.” Gravitation: Initiation Activity 1. Students were asked to drop a crumpled paper and a normal paper from the same height and noted that both objects reached back to the earth. 2. In another attempt they dropped a book and crumbled and noted that both objects reached back to the earth at the same time. 3. In the next attempt, they dropped a light pen & one heavy book and noted that both objects reached back to the earth at the same time. 4. In the next attempt, they threw two objects upwards and noted that they came back to the ground. Based on the observations from the above activities, students were able to conclude that there is some force of attraction acting on all the objects by the earth. In addition, with the discussion on the above, they were able to understand the “Newton’s Law of Gravitation” but after the understanding, the students had the following questions; Why the moon is not falling on earth due to the gravitational pull of the earth. Why earth is not falling on the sun due to the gravitational pull of the sun. Why earth is not moving if it is also being attracted by other objects and many more. With the help of discussion, students were able to find answers for the above questions and also understood the mathematical and physical significance of “Newton’s Law of Gravitation” and its importance in real life. Also, with the help of mathematical formulas and the use of equations of motion, students were able to conclude that “the time to reach on the ground from a certain height is independent of the mass of an object” Further, the student understood the concept of free fall of objects and calculated the value of acceleration due to gravity “g” with a thought in mind that does the value of “g” remains the same everywhere. BIOLOGY The biology chapter, “Why do we fall ill’ started with a Think, Pair and Share activity where the students worked in pairs to solve the questions based on the Case Study of Natural Calamity. Their answers were reviewed and presented by other group members and the facilitator filled the learning gaps. The topic ‘Personal and Community Health’ was introduced with an inquiry session where the images of healthy & stressed people were shown to them. They observed and differentiated between the images and understood the difference between personal and community health. Learners also presented the poster on ‘Recipe of Good Health’ in the class that were linked to SDG-3: Good Health and Well Being. To clarify their misconceptions regarding infectious and non-infectious diseases, a sorting activity on diseases was designed for them where they sorted different diseases into infectious or non-infectious diseases. CHEMISTRY The students started their journey of learning with the topic -Atoms and Molecules through a prior knowledge check via MS Forms Quiz followed by reflections. The chapter commenced with the historical approach of atoms where the students appreciated the contribution of various philosophers and scientists like Aristotle & John Dalton in the development of atomic theory. Taking their journey further, the Learning by Doing through Simulation Activity was designed for them. An MS Form link was shared with the video about Law of Conservation of Mass and Law of Definite Proportion, besides the hands-on simulation link wherein they answered the questions in MS form while performing the simulation. The topic Dalton’s Atomic Theory was introduced to the learners through DRTA (DIRECT READING THINKING ACTIVITY) where students questions a text, make predictions and then read to confirm or refute their predictions. In this activity, they were given a set of questions like identifying how do the postulates of Dalton’s Atomic Theory were modified according to modern atomic theory. They were divided into groups of three and each group made predictions and compared Dalton’s Atomic Theory with Modern Atomic Theory followed by their reflections.
