SPELL BEE COMPETITIONA competition in which contestants were asked to spell a broad selection of words with varying degree of difficulty. To compete, the contestants had memorized the spellings of words as written in dictionaries, and answered them accordingly. The competition was conducted School House wise in a series of rounds. Students who cleared the Preliminary round attempted the Final round thereafter. The results of the competition are awaited. MATHEMATICSHERON’S FORMULA: A prior knowledge of Area of triangle, the terms related like sides, base and height was discussed with the help of Geoboard and rubber bands. With practice, students understood the concept of Heron’s Formula and where to apply this. Students also practiced the following concepts: • Area of Triangle • Area of Triangle using Heron’s Formula • Splitting Quadrilaterals into 2 or many triangle • Application of Heron’s Formula in finding the Area of Quadrilaterals LINEAR EQUATIONS IN TWO VARIABLES: Mathematics session was began by sharing the previous knowledge of Linear equations, variables, solving linear equations. Explanation was given on linear equation in two variables. Students also enjoyed understanding of the following concepts: • Forming a Linear Equations • Solving of a Linear Equations • Graph of a Linear Equations in two Variables • Equations of Lines Parallel to the x-axis and y-axis INTEGRATION WITH ICT – Geogebra / GSP software was introduced, where graphical representation of linear equations in two variables was explained. Students enjoyed working on this software and created their own equations. INVESTIGATION: Students also INVESTIGATE themselves equation of line which is parallel to x-axis and parallel to y-axis using Geogebra / GSP software. The Practice exercises from the textbook and worksheets were done which strengthened their conceptual knowledge. SCIENCEPhysics: Chapter: Motion "We learn by example and by direct experience because there are limits to the adequacy of verbal instruction." "Give the students something to do, not something to learn; and the doing is of such a nature as to demand thinking; learning naturally results." Using the graphical knowledge in math , students represented the different aspects of motion using graphs and inter-prated the important information from the graphs. 1. Position - time graph 2. Speed- time graph Using the graphs, students also derived the equation of motion and used the same to solve the numerical problems related to real life situations. In addition, students understood and was able to relate the same to free fall of an object. Chapter : Forces and Laws of Motion "I never teach my pupils, I only provide the conditions in which they can learn." With the help of cardboard activity, students understood the concept of inertia and types of inertia. Using the above activity, students were able to state Newton's first Law of motion. To give an experiential learning, students were to playground to play various game like cricket and football to provide a fun learning for understanding linear momentum and Newton's IInd law of motion. Various application of momentum and second law were discussed by students. In addition, with various real life examples, students understood the third law of motion and its applications in real life. Chemistry: ‘I learn, I excel’ Learning Chemistry is fun at Suncity School-37 D where students learn through experiential learning where they are better able to connect theories and knowledge learned in the classroom to real-world situations. They experimented to study the properties of true solution, suspension and colloidal solution by preparing these solutions from simple materials like starch, milk, chalk and sugar. The learners enthusiastically participated in the practical which helped them to relate the concept to real-life examples which in turn proved beneficial in understanding the concepts clearly. They learn to distinguish between the solutions, suspensions and colloids by observing their properties like transparency, nature, Tyndall effect and stability. They also learn different types of solutions-saturated, unsaturated and supersaturated by dissolving salt in normal and hot water followed by the review questions to assess their conceptual understanding. This activity was certainly a fascinating beginning of their lifelong adventure with Microscopes. Students learnt about the plant tissues with the help of concept maps. Students had also drawn the diagrams of Different types of Meristematic and Permanent Tissue in their notebooks for better conceptual knowledge. The students learned about series of events in the French Society and how France became Republic. A discussion on political clubs was conducted in class and students gained knowledge about the Jacobin club and the scariest event in the history of French society ‘Reign of Terror’. The students were asked to research on the history and origin of Guillotine as a form of punishment. “A woman with a voice is, by definition, a strong woman” and the French Women was no different. The students gained insights on the role of women in the French Revolution. The impact of French Revolution on different sections of French society was discussed. Finally students enthusiastically gave summary of the revolution imagining themselves as a member of the French society. Civics: Ch.2-Constitutional Design “It always seems impossible until it's done. The lesson started with the image of Nelson Mandela being identified by the students,Images of people of South Africa suffering through Apartheid was shown to make student understand the plight .Story of Nelson Mandela was shared with the student to inspire them .Reference of Gandhi Ji was given as an inspiration to Nelson Mandela. (Integration with Visual Art)-The Anti-Apartheid song was practiced by students in the class to understand the unity and enthusiasm of South African people. Need for a constitution was discussed with reference to South Africa and student created it with the constitutions of India.Importance of 26th January was discussed as the Republic Day. Geography: Ch.2-Physical features of India India is a land of diverse land form with magnificent geographical features.The lesson was carried forward from last month to enrich students with the physical divisions of India The parallel and the longitudinal divisions of Himalayas were shown on the google maps along with the important features and the major peaks.With the help of a PPT, important points were explained . Students understood the importance of Himalayas Peninsular plateau and its divisions were shown and explained n the map of India and students were asked to locate the divisions .An oral quiz was conducted to check the learning. Responsible tourism was discussed in creation with the recent Amarnath tragedy relating to the SDG- Climate action. Another important physical division Eastern and Western ghats were discussed and highest peaks of ghats were located on the Google map by the students. Map work was done in the notebook to reinforce the knowledge. ICTThe students, in IT classes learnt about Internet, E-mail and Social media. They learnt Email Etiquette and exchanged email with each other on the topic “Global Warming”. Students in groups of 2-3 created a song and PPT on the topic of the internet and blogs, added music and tune it. ENGLISHHappiness lies in the joy of achievement, the thrill of creative effort. The human spirit needs to accomplish, to achieve, to triumph to be happy. Happiness does not come from doing easy work. It comes from the afterglow of satisfaction after the achievement of a difficult task that demands your best. This was followed by a revision of all the three cases (i.e. nominative, accusative and dative) with definite, indefinite and negative articles and the fourth case "Genetiv" was introduced. WESTERN DANCE"When you dance, your purpose is not to get to a centain place on the floor; it's to enjoy each step along the way." The session began with a new dance style- Freestyle on a patriotic song embibing the spirit of love and respect towards the nation. We used lines and curves (tools) to create a new choreography. They were also taught the basic levels of body like plie and releve. It's a good exercise for mind and body coordination, it also improves the body posture. DRAMA AND THEATREStudents learnt how to coordinate and function as a cohesive group through the Random Alphabet exercise. They were also taught about characterization and given the task of coming up with 5 characters with unique character traits and quirks. Different playing patterns, the art of Improvisation, different Time Signatures were the core essence of these lessons. VISUAL ARTSGrade IX- Landscape- Vincent Van Gogh’s sunflowers (Style - Neo-impressionism) in oil pastels Students learnt how to use oil pastels, non-linear perspective and picture composition using warm & cool colours. Non Linear Perspective - Perspective: a technique used to show 3D depth on a flat 2D picture plane. Five Types of Non-Linear Perspective: Overlapping, Size, Placement, Detail, Color. Overlapping- one object covers the second-the first appears closer. Large objects appear closer-small objects appear far away. This skill was taught through an integration with SSt- Agriculture (sunflowers).
